Mac

You can't have Bloo without Mac, so here he is. As you can see Mac went through a big change. He started out more of a "Peanuts" "Dennis the Menace" type kid but there was something about this design that didn't feel right. He felt dated to me or something and I could never really "connect" to this kid. So I quickly changed the design of the head there he was.
Only afterwards did my family point out that he looks just like me at that age. I can totally see it now, but at the time it was totally subconcious.

I'm glad you made Mac the way he looks now. It's interesting that he looks more like you once did at that age.

Like many characters, Mac sure did go through a significant transformation.

Man, when I saw this picture load, I didn't read what you typed yet. The "Old Mac" looked like the kid from ChalkWorld-whatchyamacallit on Nick. I'm glad Mac is the way he is now. Yay subconciousness!

Hmmm so the fact that he looks like you and his name is Mac is all a coincidence? That's very odd.

I'm seeing a bit of Keane's Family Circuse in there as well.

    Keep it up.

Oh! The blond version of Mac is really cute but I think that the new one is better! I'd just like to say at this time that your consept drawings are so much better than Steve Hillenburg's! His look all cruddy but yours are really beautiful! You have sooooo much talent! I heart Mac!

I love the sketch of Bloo and Mac sleeping. I'm not sure if it was intentional, but a lot of these drawings remind me of Peanuts!

Too bad we haven't seen Mac'n'Bloo do any of that adorable "Sit in the grass and talk whilst looking skyward" stuff.

    Oh well, maybe someday.

By the way, I LOVE the sketch of Mac using Bloo as a pillow. They're too cute together!

Aw, those Bloos and Macs in the top right, bottom left and bottom right look great!

That scared one at the bottom who looks like he's almost fearing his successor...
He looks familiar, was he used anywhere else in the series or am I just going mad?

If the old Mac looks familiar he was used in one quick sc. in the pilot. When Bloo is flipping through the channels he is the kid on the Lassie show who say's "Go on boy get outta here."

Wow, that first one does look like a 50's comic strip character. I gotta admit, I kind of like him with sligtly more circular hair like in a few drawings on the right, rather than the flat/squared off hair

    Hey,
Thanks for posting all this pre production stuff. I love looking at that stuff. I'm an animation student, currently enrolled at SCAD, minoring in writing and storyboarding. I love Foster's Home, i think it is one of the best written shows on television (and one of the best shows). It's fresh, creative, has unique characters, and experiments with many different types of plots and arrangments in its writing, and i respect that a lot. Especially with all the formulated shows that just keep getting re-made over and over. I was wondering what your opinion is of the main character from the show "Robot boy" who is basically a blonde clone of Mac.

Is there any chance you guys will bring back Bendy? He was so awesomely evil. I loved seeing him frustrate Bloo. And the way he's designed was so cool - those stripes and the crest that went up and down with his emotions. Please bring back Bendy!!!!

So the old Mac design was in the pilot episode? I'll have to keep an eye out for that next time it's on.

Still can't shake the feeling that some of them have a slight Family Circus feel to them.

Some of my fellow animators and I would love to see the complexity of some of your rigs and timelines. I think I've read contradicting facts about the show using flash versus After effects, but either way, I'd like to know the method of doing FK bones in either program!

your animator admirer, you guys are brilliant, the show breaches gaps in many demographics, and I find it entirely all too entertaining and funny and enjoyable and fun,

Hey Craig! I have been wondering… the final product of Mac and the other characters’ designs have amazing line quality, sort’ve like an ink brush! Was this drawn in Flash? Or did you use a program like Illustrator to design these nifty characters?

This is my favorite show on CN, keep up the good work!

Interesting group of designs. The final design is definitely my favorite, but I guess I could be biased because I've seen him so much. I do think that the final design was a nice blend of age, some of the other designs make Mac look a little younger, and though he is a young kid he's definitely smart for his age, so it is reflected by his design.

Following on what David Lewandowski said.

Your show really is a testament to how great Flash can be in the right hands. That computer program has had such a reputation for being well...ya know...cheap. The tool of the lazy/unskilled animator. But you guys have shown how cool looking it can be when you put some elbow grease in it. Not just soulessly using the tweening option but using the knowlege of things like squash and stretch and other techniques developed by decades of traditional animation.

I mean just look at the magnificent walk cycles you guys have put together for the charecters. Another less hardworking flash show would have given everyone a universal walk cycle without any sense of individuality. Then by comparison look at the friends who live in the Foster's house. Wilt has those large steps with that interesting bounce to it. Bloo kind of wiggles back and forth like jello when he walks. Coco has those big floppy feet that make her endearing. Then there's Herriman who you people somehow made both cuddly and uptight with that hop of his. It's really awesome how each walk cycle tells us a little about the charecter. Not every show has that.

Keep up the good work as always.

Wow, I came to this place though the Fosters Wikipedia article XD.

It's great that you guys wanna share all the development stuff this series went through. Makes the fans feel special that you take time out to show us how you make the magic and all that : D. I wouldnt expect such a high profile cartoon to have production members really interacting with the fans.

I like the cute peanuts-ish Mac in those collection of drawings. Plus some of the Mac and Bloo drawings. We dont see enough of Mac and Bloo being really good buddies (thought I suppose with the way Bloo is we wouldnt see much affection between them anyways)

Early Mac's head is...scary to say the least. I think the Mac we have now is the perfect character. If I were his friend, I'd probobly spend all day giving him sugar, though. I'm pretty awful.

Hm..Are there any early designs of Mr. Herriman? I would love to see what changes he's gone through. Duchess, too. From the looks of it, though, considering how many of the early designs are kind of scaring me, you might've picked the first design for her...Or maybe she started out beautiful and just got worse to fit her character?

I think it's really cool seeing all of these past sketches and ideas of the gang.

I have one question. I know that Rob Renzetti had stock kids, and they were named. Do you have sheets of stock imaginary friends, and do THEY have names?

Just wondering, because I love your stock.

I don't think I've ever had a character develope as much as Mac and Bloo. Except MY imaginary friend from 8 years ago, but she shouldn't count. I'm glad you chose Mac's design carefully. His head shape gives him a.. Well, I don't know how to describe what it gives him, but the whole design just oozes "Mac."
