Blooregard Q. Kazoo

I know it's hard to believe that there was actual visual development on a character as simple as Bloo, but it's true. He first started out as a transparent nebulous shape then became solid and got shorter and shorter. It's almost as if the character was literally coming into focus the more I thought about him.

wow! From start to finish those are huge changes, but I must admit, the first version at the top scares me a little.

a true iconic character - nice and simple.

These character developments are neat. Was Bloo based on the "superintelligent shade of the color blue" mentioned near the start of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?

Wow I'm liking the frequent updates, keep it up.

Yes, Bloo does a very nice design. It's a very simple design, animator friendly, but also capable of some real nuances when it needs to be.

One of the things that I've always enjoyed about Foster's were how iconic the designs of the charecters were. Many modern cartoons (ironically influenced by you and the others who worked on Dexter, PPG etc) are very similar in how they look. Almost to the point where if you just showed silouhetes of various charecters you might not be able to recognize them. But many of the friends at Foster's (like Bloo) have very iconic designs that are really unique and well...imaginative.

Actually I think Goo once even mentioned how cool Bloo's design was in an episode.

Dang, I wasn't expecting to see so many versions of Bloo before the final. The third one before last (top row) freaks me out a little, though.

I can't wait to see the Mac sketches.

As simple as Bloo's current (and well-loved!) design is, it still has so much personality. I could never emulate such skill! XD Love these!

I don't understand why you called him "Bloo", seems more like a "Chester" to me.

By the way, can you find some connection in both this character and Bloom (of Winx Club)?

I've always wondered how did you know it was going to work. Watching him on paper seems really too simple, but it totally works with the animation and personality. He's probably my fave main cartoon characters since Dexter in Dexter's Lab or so.

  • At July 12, 2006 12:51 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

Wow! I love Bloo! The fact that he's so simple makes him all the more wonderful! I only recently got hooked on this cartoon and have tried to catch every episode that comes on since. I can't get enough of my little blue friend. Now if only cartoonnetwork.com would bring back the plush of him!

I love him, when I was little I made a fingerpuppet out of clay that looked just like him, only he was purple and had a nose. That's why I like him so much, because he reminds me of something I would love as a kid.

  • At July 14, 2006 5:20 AM, Blogger Kallie said…

Oh wow, Bloo hasn't changed too much in the end. He'd be scary if the first design turned out to be him. The Bloo we have now looks so sweet, friendly, and huggable when you first see him...then you get to know him, and find out he's too much of a jerk to really hug...Though I think he's more oblivious than a jerk...

Allright, I have to ask this. I am quite surprised that no one has brought this up before...

What does the "Q." stand for?

And NO, it cannot be just the letter (the period denotes abbreviation). My guess: Quinlan. It sounds like something he would go to great lengths to hide from others.

Bloo just wouldn't be the same if he were tall or some nebulous blob. Perfect design for such a seemingly simple thing.

wow, you are really a rollmodel for me. im trying to be a cartoonist. this is how most of my characters start out too. pretty cool.

  • At August 17, 2006 6:24 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said…

I can actually imagine Bloo going through such major changes. The more I come to know my character, the more I need a design that just oozes who that character is. You need something that goes with the character at all times, no matter what.

Good job designing Bloo, BTW. Like I said about Mac, it just "oozes" Bloo. Sorry, that's the only way I know how to put it.

  • At August 19, 2006 9:14 PM, Blogger elephantmarchblog said…

You don't have to convince me of that. The simplest characters seem to take the longest, from what little experience I have. I looked at bloo and saw absoloute brilliance

I really love Wilt because he is a big sweetheart..............He ALWAYS thinks of others before himself! So, will we see his creator again in any upcoming new episodes of Foster's?

And also, sir, could you please tell me how many episodes of this fabulous show will be made? I would really appreciate it if you could tell me...thanks so much and have a great day! Please feel free to Email me at danarich@iquest.net

    I have a question:

    What does Bloo FEEL like?

We can easily imagine what Eduardo, Coco and Wilt feel like...

But does Bloo feel like Jelly? Silicon? Play-dough?

These things hurt my thirtysomething brain.

Admittedly, when I watched the show for the first time, I found something very humourous about Bloo, in which I could only sum it up in four words: Ribbed For Her Pleasure. But as time passed I found myself more drawn to Mac and Frankie...and in a way, Cheese, who is probably the butt of some similar jokes.
