As always, these sketches are excellent, though a couple of 'em seriously freak me out... though they shouldn't.

Oh wait, I just wrote 'though' twice in one sentence. My grammar is awful.

I was looking forward to seeing Coco. Yay! Are you by any chance going to post Mac and Frankie?

Hey there's our girl Coco!!!So glad to see her.

But what's up with the slug motif? Thankfully you changed her to her present form. I can't imagine her being anything but a "bird/airplane thing" as Bloo so affectionatly called her. Plus it gave us that very quirky Swiss army knife egg laying thing of hers.

    Yeah... I like Coco...

The slug-headed version is pretty wierd compared to the Palmtree one... Looks almost like a nightmare from eating too much airline food.

Hello, Coco. I love your voice, but I can't understand anything you say. Could you please start using speech bubbles when you talk?

I love seeing compilations like this that show how characters are created and evolve. It's an amazing insight into the process of character design.

I notice that the airplane body is used in all the models. Everything else was just built after it, eh? (the ones without the plant look a little creepy, to be honest)

That monster on the upper right side looks pretty creepy... was Coco always meant to be a bird? (If she is one... :->)

wow, i really like the one without the palm tree too.. is that what boy coco's look like?

thanks for showing us.. it'd be interesting to know who drew what and which came first... also, were there any variations on bloo or did you have him nailed right from the start?

Coco on the lower left looks like a slug. The one on the upper right looks like a sandworm from 'Dune'. I 'm glad you settled on the one you did!

The "Slug" Coco was a character in another show that I created just before Foster's. When I began developing Foster's I pulled elements from the slug version to create Coco. The idea behind Coco is that she was created by a lonely kid trapped on a desert island. Her design elements are made up of the kids thoughts/surroundings. Her tree head = the palm trees on the island, Her airplane body=the dream of being rescued and nightmare of how the kid ended up on the island, Her red beak=the deflated rubber raft that brought the kid to the island, Her shoeless sunburned feet=all the kid stares at all day, and her name Coco= Coconuts, what the kid lived on. As you can tell I think too much about this stuff. Oh and all the drawings are by me.

Wow I didn't know so much psychological analysis went into designing Coco. Very interesting insight.

So how many times has "Coco" said "Coco"?

Whoa... After reading what went into making Coco, I like her even more.

The thought of the kid who created her's predicament sounds like it might make a nice bittersweet story all by itself... :)

wow! coco makes so much sense now! it's like learning the answer to a good riddle. i'm sure i must have known it on some subconscious level, but coco seemed like such a random mix of things... i'll have to ponder the other characters a lot more, now...

I absolutely love Coco. (I love the backstory on her too, haha.)

One episode, I actually started to understand something Coco said..."We could -kill- him." Then I realized I needed to stop watching TV and go outside for awhile.

    Hey Craig,

    I LOVE Coco!!
I think she is a brilliant character.

I want to know when there we will be some Foster's Toys and DVDs we can purchase??
I do a pretty good Coco voice but my handpuppet animation doesn't do her justice.

    Love your work,

She really is quite frightening in her early designs...and I thought she was freaky, now! Ah well, I still like her, either as a hideous slug-monster airplane type thing, or a palm-tree bird airplane type thing!

I've been watching "Fosters" for a while, I just thought Coco was a bird.
But, a crashed airplane and a palm tree? That's Coco-nuts!

Your blog is inspirational. I've been put off doing animation because of the drawing skill I thought you need - but judging by your sketches it can't be too hard.

What software do you use for Fosters?
