Imagining a friend

When creating a character I go through lots of really fast and loose ideas trying to find the right design elements that will visually define the personality of the character. Here is a page of some of those sketches I did when designing Wilt.

Interesting process of creating a character =)

Oh, and hello, McCracken! You're one of my favorite artists, ever since I fell in love with your previous cartoon, Powerpuff Girls way back in 1999...when I still was a ten-year-old naive little girl. I love your newest creation, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends as well. It's very imaginative (no pun intended) and original; I hope Foster's Home will be as successful as PPG! I look forward to the secrets behind Foster's Home as well as your future works.

Wow, I'm glad to see you guys put a blog up. It's good to see the producion process as it happens. I have a tremendous respect for "Foster's" and feel it is a well written and finely executed animation. Keep up the good work!

The sketches of Wilt are inspiring, also. We're in the middle of producion on our 22 minute (target) stop-motion project and are doing such things as finalizing character design (not to mention recording our voice actors and builing oodles of sets!) at this time. We're going to submit it to film fests across the state next year. I think I'll keep an eye on this journal not just for the Joy of "Foster's", but also for inpiration and motivation. Keep posting!!

Are you going to show more sketches with other characters, like Coco, Eduardo, etc?

Ha, does he have basketballs for eyes in one? :D It must be so much harder to settle on a design for something as...diverse as an imaginary friend, they can look like ANYTHING!! Any special reason you wanted him to be red? (Since many of the sketches are red.)

The yellow guy with the crutch looks interesting; it really stands out in that picture. I feel that you ultimately selected the best possible design for Wilt, as I’ve seen absolutely no flaws in regards to his appearance, er, well, other than his intentional abnormalities.

That yellow version of WIlt looks like he's seen some REALLY hard times!

Thanks for sharing these. I always like seeing the changes involved when going from idea to finished design.

That's really interesting to see! Wilt is easily my favorite character, and it's always fun to see some of the steps that creators go through when building their characters. Can't wait to see more on the blog!

You went through a ton of designs with Wilt -- just, incredible. Some of them are kinda creepy, and some are not. I'm satisfied with the final version.

The others are pretty good, though.

Very interesting designs! It's nice to see the process by which my favorite Foster's character has been brought to "life", so to speak, and the "evolutionary" steps he went through! Some of them, I have to admit, are a bit disturbing, but they are all part of the process. I guess a character as complex as Wilt is would indeed take awhile to finalize, wouldn't he? I must say, though, that I'm really pleased with the end result!

    Hello, Rachel here.

Heard finally about this, and HAD to check it out. Yes, I'm a HUGE Wilt fan, I even draw him A LOT, yet it was hard at first.

So, ANYWAY, I was awestruck to see Wilt in earlier production. Wow, he was going to be YELLOW? And he used to have lost TEETH/A TOOTH? And his eyes used to be BASKETBALLS?? Lost a leg? Four eyes? Left eyestalk a stump like his left arm? O_O I never saw that coming. And I see he WASN'T created "broken". ^_^

If you didn't change Wilt into what we see in the show, why, I wouldn't like him as much. Just as I say, if he were to change (or changed before the show ever aired) he WOULD NOT be the same. I love who he is as of now, and changing him would make me go all "WHO THE HECK ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE WITH WILT?!"

I just ADORE the laying down pose he's giving (with the missing RIGHT eye and missing tooth) although even if he DID look like that now, he wouldn't be the same as what we're used to seeing.

And I can almost imagine the transformation it took, starting with the basketball-eyed one to the yellow, to the rough sketched with missing leg, next the four-eyed one, next the one that looks simmiar except the left eyestalk is a stump and he's missing teeth, the one that I commented on earier, (the one where he's laying down) the one where the only difference is the "wonky" eye is drooping, and at last the final result. :D

But it's my educated guess. I could be 100% wrong, believe me, I've been wrong before. Hee hee, this comment is probably the longest one around, and I'm sorry for that, yet I had no choice to write all this and get it all off my chest. But for now I have to stop.

    I bid you, ado...

I SWEAR- I've seen that yellow version of Wilt on the show at one point, although slightly different... I also think I saw the mouth-with-eyes-and-arms-and-legs one too...

poor poor wilt.. seems like the idea you were going with for him is that of a severely physically abused imaginary friend, whose creator liked to beat the crap out of him.. thank goodness for fosters home. i don't think he'd do well on the streets.

I've always noticed something about Wilt, he resembles a lot to Snake from "the gang green gang". They both have the same brand of shoes, they have wristbands, and they're both long and stretchy, well Snake becomes stretchy in "power lunch". Same with the rest of the characters, Eduardo is like Big Billy, he's really big and strong and not exactly the smartest character, and both Ed and Arturo(is that how you spell it) have Spanish accents. Coco is also like Grubber because they both have their own language and Mr.Herriman and the Mayor have the same clothes almost and both have a monocle and hat. The other characters I'm still trying to find connections to, but I'm sure the characters from FHFIF have something in common with the characters from PPG.

This is gonna sound stupid, but has anyone tried IMAGINING a new arm for Wilt? Seems kinda cruel that he only has a stub. Unless, of course, the kid that imagined him was also missing an arm (or other appendage)? Just curious...

Wow...That one of Wilt as just a mouth with arms and legs reminds me alot of...What's his name...Itchy? Ickus..? Something like that...from that old Nick show Ahhh! Real Monsters! Never really liked that show too much, but Ickus or whatever his name was was my favourite..

Er...Anyway, you're one of my favourite artist-type people! Right up there with Jhonen Vasquez and Claude Monet! Look foward to more comments by me in the future, haha!

hmm :) Wilt is one of my favourite character's out of all the cartoons i watch, and it was unusual to see him so battered like this. I think my favourite one is the yellow one. I just pick him up and hug him. Like a tiny tim sort of thing huh?

WIIIIIILTTTT!! He is like the only reason that show is running. (At least, in my opinion) You should, like, do a little series all about him. Now, time for my trade-mark fan-girl scream. AAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

Same person again. I forgot something. So that's what Wilt would have looked like if he hadn't had that accident. Ah well, it wouldn't have gone with the whole "always happy" thing. That's kind of necessary in the piolet episode. Ahem. AAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

I'm so glad Wilt looks the way he did now. The Tiny Tim Wilt is gross. The current design is good. Not too grossly beat-up, but still beat up. But how did he get those stitches on his head? I know how he lost his arm and messed up his eye (I saw Good Wilt Hunting), but the stitches.. Are a mystery. :|

I love the movie "Good Wilt Hunting". I saw the poster wilt had Walked in the Depot. I saw wilts creator jordan and then I saw a gopher. I knew it was the gopher called Golly from the new tv show "Out of Jimmy's head". I was thinking if you can make the movie Re-animated come again in november 29, 2007. And can you make the FHFIF movie GWH come every "Thank Giveing". And can you make a GWH2.
